The federal government categorizes jobs into groups or families called a series. The series is a four-digit numbering system for organizing similar jobs. Related jobs will have series numbers that are closer together.
For example, medical, dental and public health jobs are between 0600-0699. Nursing jobs are in the 0610 series and nursing assistant jobs are in the 0621 series.
The USAJOBS Career Explorer can match you with over 300 job series in the federal government.
The USAJOBS Career Explorer uses a unique approach to finding job matches for you based on your interests. Experts believe that interest is the cornerstone of a fulfilling career. When you are genuinely interested in your job, it not only leads to greater job satisfaction but also to long-term career success.
Each question talks about broad activities that many jobs could include. We take your answers and correlate that with job series that you might be interested in.
